Depression era con-man Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neil) reluctantly accepts the responsibility of transporting orphaned Addie Loggins (Tatum O'Neil) from her deceased mother's graveside to her Aunt's farm in Missouri. Along the way Moses discovers that his 9-year-old travel companion is a better con-artist than he is. The two are more alike than either would dare to admit and eventually they form an odd but profound friendship.

Inspite of being released in 1973, Paper Moon doesn't seem the least bit dated. Maybe that's because it was 'dated' at the time it was filmed. Shot in glorious black & white, it has the feel of a film much older.

I'm not sure if it was the comforting familiarity of working with her father or if it was just a character perfectly suited for her talents, but Tatum O'Neil knocks my socks off every time I watch this movie. If ever a young actress deserved Oscar recognition, she's the one. The kid is just spectacular (and the film isn't bad either!).

I enjoyed watching this movie. I can see why Tatum O'Neal won an Oscar for she was really good for such a young age. Really carried the movie along nicely. Interesting how her real dad Ryan O'Neal played her father. They worked good together. Had some funny parts. Both of them have really good facial expressions. Worth a watch if you can stand black and white!

A wonderful and hilarious film. Beautifully shot and relying on a sharp script and a cool soundtrack, PAPER MOON is a marvelous achievement from Peter Bogdanovich. A 70's movie that looks and feels like a 30's movie (that's a good thing). The couple formed by Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal) and Addie (Tatum O'Neal; real life father and daughter) is what makes this a classic. Both of them gave realistic and funny performances. Madeline Kahn and P.J. Johnson are the cherry on top. Fantastic movie.

There's not another movie out there that's like this one. Tatum O'Neil won an Oscar for her performance starring alongside her Dad. And, it's said that her Dad was jealous that she won and he didn't. This is when Tatum was in the throws of her abusive childhood, too.

So, yeah, this film is best remembered for netting young Tatum O'Neal an Oscar. Still, it is a pretty great film that delights with its humor and offers just enough heavy drama to keep us invested in the unfolding plot. Tatum's performance is inarguably one of the all-time finest by a child actor, but Madeline Kahn's saucy turn as a ditzy, gold-digging stripper steals the movie. What a naturally gifted comic actress that lady was. The way she delivers that vulgar bit of dialogue as she is trying to persuade Tatum's character to get back in the car caused me to laugh-out-loud, even now just thinking back on it. These are sad characters that feel so relatable in spite of their immoral schemes, as each of them chases their respective dreams of prosperity in Depression-era America. Bogdanovich's decision to film the movie in black-and-white enhances the old-time feel of earlier road pictures. For their efforts, the cast and crew got it right and have left us a pleasant little gem of a movie.

Tatum O'Neal was very deserving of her Oscar for this film, she is delightfully witty and sarcastic.

However the film overall isn't much to look at. It's cute, but not at all earth-shattering.

Tatum O'Neil became the youngest person to win an Oscar for this movie. And I think she definitely deserved it. I loved this movie. It is delightfully shot in B&W. I am a big fan of Tatum as a young actress and she does not disappoint. Her developing relationship with the con man is endearing and well played. Ryan O'Neil's (Tatum's real life father) character grows on you as you realize he is finding a soft spot for this little girl. I am so glad I watched this movie. I almost want to watch it again, immediately.

A con man finds a little disciple in Depression-era Kansas. Sad, amusing, and touching all at the same time as a family of sorts is formed in crime. Rather like a gentler version of Bonnie and Clyde.

DAMMIT! I was on this streak of make Peter Bogdanovich jokes but now I have to temper those. I loved this movie! I can almost say that I loved this movie too much.

Now, quick backstory. This is one of those movies that I've lied about seeing in the past because it would have negated my argument. That's right. I'm what they call "a turd". Really, I can find nothing wrong with this movie whatsoever. In fact, at the end of the of year, I'm going to have to re-evaluate my top ten movies of all time and decide whether or not this movie fits in the list. It's that good.

See, it's really hard to write about a good movie. I don't want to raise everyone's expectations to an unreasonable level, but this is safely an enjoyable movie. I have to say this. While watching it, I kept going back to Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird. Bogdanovich knows his cinema history and this movie really calls back to a completely different age of filmmaking. It's light-hearted without being campy but hits some very serious tones occasionally without being melodramatic. Now, I can't ever say there are truly dark moments in the film, but Bogdanovich manages to bring to attention when it is time to be serious. This is a very mature (not content wise, but philosophically) movie. I guess I'm going to have to add this one to my collection.

I'm scared cos of the religious overtones....

I should see it for research purposes!

Sounds quite a way from Wizard of Oz? or maybe not that far removed...

Wow! I loved this! Tatum O'Neal was fabulous in her role and the movie was all around a good time. It is a movie where you are rooting for the bad guys and you come to love them so much that even though common sense dictates that you should feel a certain way about them it is hard to not be rooting for these crooks!

Watching this, I realized that I seem to be pretty fond of quite a few movies that have an unusual child and father figure relationship. Maybe those movies just tend to be really good or something. =)

I love Tatum O'Neal! She is my favorite actress of all time! She did a great job in this movie. It's hard to believe she was as young as she was when she did this movie. She deserved the Oscar and the title of the youngest person ever to win an Oscar!
