Tropic Thunder Better than I thought it would be, hilarious at times, and completely over the top. If you're looking for a mid-summer laugh and you've skipped Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder is good for some laughs. Every open ended joke ends up closed by the end. With an all-star cast, this movie could've been better, but that's not the point of the movie. This is merely a way to get a few laughs and have Tom Cruise do his best dancing since Risky Business. fb718492929 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder I don't know why so many people i know were knocking this movie. Tropic Thunder was hilarious! Ben Stiller and Jack Black are comedy GOLD but Robert Downey Jr. STEALS THE SHOW as Kirk Lazarus...the method actor who "plays the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude". While Downey Jr. definitely has most memorable/quotable lines in the film, the entire cast makes this movie work on the levels that it needs to. Even Tom Cruise redeemed his image and shoddy career as of late in my ways with his part in what is in my opinion, THE comedy of the Summer, take that, Pineapple Express. i'd like to end this review by saying "I'm a lead farmer, motherfucker!" Instant Classic. fb1405508465 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder Pretty funny. I was exceptionally tired when I went to see this, and I'm pretty sure I went out for a few minutes a couple of times right in the middle, but what I saw was hilarious. I'll have to see it again to be sure though. Jantigreen85 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder not the funniest thing you were hoping for from the previews and the amusing idea of the storyline, but i still got quite a few laughs out of it. and tom cruise's cameoish role is definitely the best part of this movie. Pineapple Express was funnier. fb666367317 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder I thought this movie was quite entertaining in the least but at times it felt a little slow and unfunny. There were good amounts of funny parts but it was not all laugh out loud funny in some parts. Downey Jr's performance is the best thing about the movie and probably the fake trailers at the beginning as well. Because he was the only character who seemed to be different than the rest in his pigment, it was a definite performance and one that is not racist but rather a testament to what actors go through to play all these different characters and the means they go through to play them. This is further complemented by the conversation that takes place between Downey and Stiller In which (spoilers) they talk about what lengths people go through to play retards in movies. I can see how mentally challenged people can be offended by this but it is true in a way. Never go full retard as Downey says to Stiller talking about his performance in Simple Jack in which he went full retard and did not win an oscar. But when all is said and done, this was definitely an entertaining movie. Cruises part although funny at first becomes stained and a little unfunny as it seems to be a repeat of what was said before. Although what was the best part about Downey's performance was when they go to rescue Stiller and he pretends to be a farmer only to reveal that he is a lead farmer with tow m-16s concealed in his coat. fb722695342 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder Hilarious throughout. I loved the references to Platoon and Nutty Professor 2! Also Tom Cruise and Matthew McConoghey (I spelled that so wrongly) were amazing (which is the first time I've ever said that) mattwendrick May 9, 2008
Tropic Thunder not funny at all....the only reason i gave it this many stars is because of the opening scene with the movie trailers....and jack black tied up to a tree...other than that...awful awful awful movie...so bummed i was definitely looking forward to this one fb39513573 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder Tropic Thunder is seriously flat out hilarious spoof of Hollywood.Ben Stiller came up with really funny script and well directed too.Lots of great cameos by Matthew Machoney,Bill Hader and most of all: Tom Cruise in which his funniest role ever!Jack Black is too funny to be true and Robert Downey Jr. definitely showed his true comedic side.Overall I must say its the funniest movie I've seen this far and I do recommend watching it if want lots of laughs and action. fb741250254 Mar 22, 2008
Tropic Thunder Some jokes I didn't get, but I was surprised this movie was directed by Ben Stiller! Great casting too, I really liked the plot of this movie! I was actually very amazed of Ben's work!! Great music, great comedian ;] fb665876829 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder Funny nonstop from start to finish. This film was a spoof within a spoof, and had the balls to play it serious the entire time, never laughing at itself. That had to have been extremely hard. Usually when a star-studded cast get together, its a laugh here and there, inside jokes galore, and you forget about it the next day, primarily because one star usually ends up outdoing the rest. But as funny and hilarious as Downey Jr. was, every other actor was spot on and it meshed into one of the funniest movies I have seen in recent memory. I mean, COME ON, Tom Cruise as a bald fat guy dancing? I didn't know that guy had a sense of humor! That alone was worth the price of the movie (5 bucks). This is a stupid movie for smart people. fb22424529 Aug 20, 2008
Tropic Thunder the more you know movies and the egos behind them, the more you will ejoy this movie. For me, it was a violent, politically incorrect return to form for Ben Stiller. Everyone is on top of their game. I doubt I'll see a funnier film in 2008. fb501752977 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder An absolutely steaming fartburger of a movie. Never amusing ever. It satirizes something (actors, narcissism, ego-mania) that has been satirized millions of times. Relies on Tom Cruise to deliver the laughs. (you do the math) Downey's Kingfish/Amos and Andy routine just gets old. Everybody else never even get started. fb546515276 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder This movie was good. It's not as good as Pineapple Express. Robert Downey Jr. pretending to be a black guy is hilarious. And Tom Cruise...lmao. fb1272930643 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder This is a comedy that manages to find the top and go way over it while still maintaining its dignity. The chemistry of the primaries is great, and Tom Cruise is down right hilarious. I might now like the man, but this role is a good one. All of the references to other "Vietnam" movies (mostly Platoon) is great. fb6416720 Aug 13, 2008
Tropic Thunder I just saw this movie and was surprised at how good it was! Very funny. Robert Downey Jr. steals the show. He is an awesome actor! fb1299868403 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder thank god ben stiller was smart enough to pull his head out of his own ass, quit making stupid comedies and return to his ben stiller show roots. people were pretty much right about this movie: jack black is the weakest link, but still funny, downey jr. is incredibly hilarious, and the intro (which i wont give away) had me doubling over.... you know a comedy's good when it's got you laughing not even 5 minutes into it. go see it! fb132500666 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder For a comedy, it surprisingly had compelling human relationships! And this may be Tom Cruise's best performance! fb780492151 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder incredibly funny, but i can only imagine that an extended or directors cut will do the film more justice. it was very easy to see that a lot was cut. what was left was comedy gold fb509901807 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Most I've laughed in a movie for a long time. Tom Cruise was terrible. Jay Baruchel will be a star. fb682040411 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Bloody, Funny and a great combination of useless Nonsense and pure Overacting. Tom Cruise is a Showstealer! Go and watch it. You won't regret it! fb1441449960 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Loved this movie, Robert Downey Jr. plays an interestingly funny black guy. Man he is now my favorite actor fb505002158 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder This is one of the funniest movies that I have seen in a long, long time. Best comedy this year for sure. fb1366326836 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder This movie tried way too hard to be funny. Way. Too. Hard. Once upon a time, comedies used to actually rely on being clever and innovative and, yes, they could be raunchy too, but not to the point where you feel violated or like you need a shower after someone makes a joke. Jack Black's ramblings about sucking dick made me yearn for shower or even sink. I do not need to hear that, nor get the mental image of him doing it. Another thing I can't stand about comedies anymore is fuck. FUCK. You laughing? Me either. I don't really see how saying fuck a lot is supposed to be funny, yet everytime some one said it, yelled it, alluded to it, everyone exploded with laughter. Now in the scenario where Robert Downey Jr. yells, "I'm a lead farmer, muthafucka!" that's funny. Why? Cause it's Robert Downey Jr. pulling a Samuel L. Jackson. Not just saying fuck to say fuck. I had heard that Tom Cruise had a supposedly 'amazing' cameo, but uh...it didn't do it for me. At all. Every second he was on the screen it made me want to leave. Sure, it might have been a cute joke if it would have actually been a cameo. He was probably in a good 20 minutes of the movie and it felt like 40. Every other brief cameo was funny because they were in and out before the joke got too stale and repetitive. Basically I found the irreverent and random jokes to be the funniest, and everything that was supposed the be the big piece joke wasn't. Ben Stiller and the severed head. Not funny. Ben Stiller throwing the kid. Not funny. Ben Stiller killing a panda. Not funny. Just stupid and overwrought. What did I like about it? The cast was pretty good, save Jack Black and Ben Stiller. Robert Downey Jr. is always amazing, but the main thing I liked about everyone else [Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, and Nick Nolte] is that they were playing their characters without trying to be over-the-top lunatic funny like everyone else, which in turn made them funnier by comparision. The other thing that surprised me about this movie was how great the cinematography was and how action-y the action sequences were. Comedy movies usually look like they were filmed on 2 dollars, and comedy/action movies usually focus more on the funny than the boom boom. This was the opposite. I can honestly say I thought it worked better as an action movie. Kung Fu Panda and Get Smart were funnier. fb39610053 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder I did laugh but I also felt embarrassed for watching it. Any movie that does that is not getting above a 3. fb34703732 Aug 16, 2008
Tropic Thunder While watching this film, I was reminded of a Mark Twain quote: "Cheer up. The worst is yet to come." This applies to the five lead actors in Tropic Thunder, a film, which is based off a book by a former Vietnam vet (Nick Nolte). The actors, unwittingly, think they're filming a movie, but are in fact, thrust into a war against druglords. As the film opens, we're treated to three faux movie trailers and one commercial. Each displaying the actor's latest films. These set off the laughs right away. Then we get a narration by Nolte, who plays "Four Leaf" Tayback. We see a destructive battle in Vietnam going on, actually a scene from the movie, Tropic Thunder (the one in the film). Ben Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, an action star who's trying to ditch the cheesy action films and go for something a little more dramatic. He's also trying to recover from his latest film, where he portrayed a mentally challenged farmhand with a gift for reading horses minds. We're told that the film was a critical failure (dubbed "one of the worst films of all time") and a box-office bomb. Robert Downey, Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a Russell Crowe-type actor who's so into method acting, he undergoes skin pigmentation to portray an African-American soldier. We also get Jeff Portnoy, the Eddie Murphy of the group. A comic actor with a serious heroin addiction. The other two are rapper-turned-actor Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) and newcomer Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel). They can't seem to get serious about the film. Fed up with everything, the film's director (Steve Coogan), takes advice from "Four Leaf" and thrusts them into the jungle wilds, with hidden cameras watching their every move. Only, when they're left on their own, they think they're still filming, especially Speedman, who doesn't know that the druglords are, in fact, killer druglords. What's their to say about this film? It's hilarious in every way. I've always been a fan of the movie-within-a-movie genre, and this definitely reaches the top of my list. Downey, Jr. is the best of all (and not that controversial), but the rest of the cast does an excellent job. Stiller's direction is great. We also get hilarious support from Matthew McConaughey as Tugg's agent and Tom Cruise as an egomanical, bald, overweight producer. Much to my surprise, Tom Cruise is freakin' hilarious in this role. Tropic Thunder is explosive in every way. erk42 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Extremely funny, over-the-top offensive, and the perfect summer slapstick comedy. No academy awards for this one, but it's what Pineapple Express should have been. Stiller and Downey, Jr. were phenominal, and Black was actually funny compared to previous movies. All other cameos and slapstick were ridiculous, but I lost my breathe a couple of times laughing so hard in this movie. Be in the mood, though. fb1265130084 Aug 14, 2008
Tropic Thunder Considering the critical hoopla, a major disappointment! Was the lack of creativity a casuality from the writer's strike? Im looking at the other reviews below questioning if I even saw the same movie beyond the first half hour. Robert Downey Jr. and (dare I spoil the surprise) Tom Cruise were the only redeemable qualities in this movie. I got a kick out of how they elevated the mediocre material that I pray to God doesnt get a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nod. At least "Southland Tales" was trying to tell us something. Though not the glorious train wreck as the Richard Kelley 2007 disaster, Ben Stiller's ambitious, self-indulgent film derailed from its original destination. fb12304545 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Great cast for a summer comedy, although the story got a bit drawn out and melodramatic at times. The satire somewhat makes up for it, and there are more than a few moments that are just hilarious. Definitely worth seeing even though it isn't really a comedy classic that you'll remember later. fb5252435 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder I can't recommend this movie. (I'm a little embarrased to admit I even watched it.) It's got a few funny parts but it is mostly bad and very R rated! fb1148224642 Aug 15, 2008
Tropic Thunder Very entertaining. Downey funny as expected (thanks to Ironman). Black funnier than usual. Stiller funny as always. Loved the cameos. fb704751762 Aug 13, 2008
Tropic Thunder It wasn't quite the horrible mess I thought it would be, although it's far from great. Robert Downey Jr, you are amazing...and Montreal native Jay Baruchel! I thought his career was over! fb503655528 Aug 7, 2008
Tropic Thunder I probably would have given this movie four stars if it wasn't for the stomach ache caused by all of my guilty laughing. Hahaha! fb609565796 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder After a break from watching movies, this is what I see? What the hell was this about. The part that he played with the head, made my boyfriend laugh like hell, I almost threw up...yup...that's true. I just sat there the entire time and thought...WTF? fb6313925 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder I really, really want to know if the inspiration for Tom Cruise's character is one of the Weinsteins. fb641429645 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder not my normal "type" of movie, but I wanted something funny. Not bad really. Robert Downey Jr was pretty cool. Sorry for the poor review. fb514103233 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder funny. It's very easy to recognize To Cruise! There is something in his facial expression and features ..... fb747135398 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder It was pretty funny throughout, but I couldn't stand Jack Black's character and I had trouble dealing with the tonal shifts. fb37608347 Apr 20, 2008
Star Wars: The Clone Wars The Cartoon Network show that ran from 03-05 was a breath of fresh air for the Star Wars world, thanks mostly to the excellent animation of Genndy Tartakovsky. This one uses lame video-game like animation, and has sub par voice work, so why should I care? casillase1 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder awsome... pretty funny how these guys are acting like they someone else and funny how they try to act... lmao kmong209 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Robert Downey Jr. is pure genius. Great to see yet another adult comedy even though I hoped for a bit more from Stiller and Black. fb816839792 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Girls, send your s.o. to this movie alone. It's got enough explosions and fart jokes to keep them entertained for hours. There are moments of fairly good humor, but it's just not enough to sustain that 2nd X chromosome for an entire movie. fb678671176 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder This movie was simply hilarious, the trailers at the beginning caught me off guard lol. The cameos were right on point, waiting for the DVD release. gelpadre Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder This movie wasn't quite as funny as I thought it would be but it was still pretty good. Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Cruise were THE stars in this movie, without them this wouldn't be nearly as good. fb763971662 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder It seems like Hollywood likes making fun of its self these days. Unfortunately, that's not really a great thing. The proof: Scary Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Superhero Movie and the soon to be released sh** fest that is Disaster Movie. They're still making fun of themselves even when they're not trying, like giving us horrible horror films like The Eye, and cheap romantic comedies like Made of Honor. I remember the days when Hollywood tried and when they failed, heck, at least they tried. And whenever they plan to mock their status, which is that they lack good ideas, they pick the worst people imaginable to show Hollywood is insecure with itself. Tropic Thunder, the latest spin on this endless trend of mockery films, could've just been called War Movie. I knew Tropic Thunder was going to be WAY above all those other films mentioned, quality wise, thanks to the talent behind it all. But I could never believe that this movie could become one of the most solid comedies of the summer and one of the best movies of the summer. Tropic Thunder proves to be a better war film than the ones of a serious venture, but let's face the fact we're not getting anything intelligent here. Yeah, this movie is completely stupid, proud of it and that combo works to its advantage. The Mummy 3 was dumb and proud of it, but that didn't mix all that well in the end. Tropic Thunder reeks stupidity and Ben Stiller intends to offend everyone except the mentally handicapped, which he does anyways. I bet if a group of African-Americans protested, Stiller would say he wasn't offending them, Tom Cruise lovers would do the same and he'd say it's not making fun of him either. Ben Stiller really isn't trying to offend anyone except Hollywood and Hollywood welcomes that openly. Seriously, Tropic Thunder basically makes fun of all the mistakes Hollywood has made and are still making. And it makes so much sense when you're watching it, a stupidity that works. I bet the leaders of the Mentally Handicapped Leaders were killing themselves by not laughing during the Simple Jack scenes. Because writers Justin Theroux and Ben Stiller know how to blend this laugh at yourself and laugh at others formula, they achieve Stupid/Smart kind of laughs. Even the actors are laughing at themselves, doing a bunch of things that make them look like wannabes. We're getting something of the Mel Brooks variety, solid and fun, nothing life scarring like Epic Movie. So basically, don't be offended by anything this film appears to have, the filmmakers and actors alike are really just crashing their reputations, while actually boosting them in the process. We all get something out of it. Tropic Thunder has an amazing cast, who give their all and nothing but that. We got Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Toby Maguire (briefly), Matthew McConaughey, Bill Hader, Nick Nolte, Danny McBride, Steve Coogan and Tom Cruise in his best performance EVER! The characters are the heart of the film, beyond the extreme violence and constant f-bombers. We start off loving them and end with that feeling at the end. Ben Stiller fans will be happy with the fact that he just saved his career and now deserves to have the cute wife of his Christine Taylor. Other special things to note is Matthew McConaughey doesn't take off his shirt in this one, Toby Maguire's cameo is creepy, Danny McBride has another hit after Pineapple Express and Tom Cruise gives his most respectable performance, he's making an ass of himself. Without Cruise, Tropic Thunder would've definitely been missing something. Unfortunately for you hardcore Jack Black fans, you may not appreciate the fact that Black has one of the most hollow characters of the story, he just doesn't get as much to show as usual, so people seeing this solely for Black, you're better off waiting for the School of Rock sequel. There's also been Oscar buzz for this movie, thanks to the ever-awesome Robert Downey Jr., who's the true highlight of the movie. I thought his performance in Iron Man was solid, but nothing special. Here Downey takes his talents to the next level, doing something completely different from everything he's done. He doesn't play the perfect black man, but I don't think he was supposed to in the first place. Imagine Mr. T, but even more dramatic. Downey's act, while nothing compared to Heath Ledger's Joker, is a shaky bet that he could make it to the Golden-Globes, the Oscars are pushing it. This year brings us some of the strongest performances in very unlikely movies. I said above that Tropic Thunder is actually better than a lot of war films out there, I wasn't comparing to masterpieces like Saving Private Ryan or Full Metal Jacket, most of the recent ones, mostly of the Vietnam genre. The action's crazy in this movie, seriously well done and keeps us laughing through all that gore. Speaking of gore, the film's full of it, so you people sensitive to seeing guts flying out of someone's stomach, look elsewhere. I love it how this film makes fun of the cliche's in war films, from the shock moments, where the man can't hear anything while carnage surrounds him. People unloading bullets without stopping, maybe that's more Rambo like, but Rambo started in Nam. You'll see great stunts and special effects the whole way through, while inhaling your popcorn in laughter. Tropic Thunder has ended up being a huge surprise to me. Not only do the critics love it (more than Pineapple Express), but I loved it. Everyone's just having a good time, watching nonsense never done better. This is what happens when people who actually have talent make a movie like this. There's a lot to remember from this film, Tom Cruise' coolest act, Robert Downey Jr.'s superb portrayal of the bad portrayal of a black man and the list goes on. Set aside all the concerns that you may have with it, don't take it seriously and get ready to see a rock solid spoof with stupid but funny humor and intense action. Rock solid and spoof.............. that's three words I thought would never be together. See it! Kirk Lazarus: I know who I am! I'm the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude! broncojameson Aug 14, 2008
Tropic Thunder Absolutely brilliant blend of satire and Stiller comedy. Rober Downey Jr. continues his streak of brilliant performances. fb523135129 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Tropic Thunder was completely ridiculous, as it was fully intended to be. The plot and characters were silly in the same vein as other Ben Stiller movies like Dodgeball and Zoolander. Although Tropic Thunder comes nowhere near the neighborhood of hilarity and comic goodness that is Dodgeball, there were a lot of funny moments and many laugh out loud one liners. I worried with Ben Stiller so involved in writing and production that the film would be over the top with the gross out humor, but there wasn't an inappropriate amount of potty humor for the genre. Ben Stiller also kept his monologues fairly short which is a blessing and allowed the film to be paced well. The casting was fun and really contributed to the overall effect of the film; Robert Downey Jr. was hilarious. I really enjoyed the film and look forward to seeing it again and owning it on DVD. fb703585216 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder had me laughing from start to finish! the entire cast was just...perfect especially Robert Downey Jr! completely over the top but just plain hilarious. fb565083687 Aug 6, 2008
Tropic Thunder I appreciated the satire here, but I think the only reason critics loved it so much was because of all the inside jokes. There was good satire, but the jokes just weren't funny all too often. ... Tell you what, though - the best part of this movie is Tom Cruise. Hilarious. Especially because it's Tom Cruise. Say what you want about the Scientology whack-job -- but I've loved him in just about every movie he's been in. fb676902310 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Ben Stiller's extremely well made and acted satire on the film industry is little more than just that. It's not the year's best comedy, no, not in the least. I'm not saying it's not funny, I'm just saying it could've been funnier, a lot funnier. In fact, most of the funny comes in the scenes that are outside of the main action. The acting however was fantastic. Robert Downey Jr. is absolutely genius as Australian actor Kirk Lazarus, who's playing the film within the film's african american Sargeant. His character is so into his character that we don't see much at all of the real Kirk Lazarus, and that makes Downey's performance all the more powerful. He's doesn't only do a great job playing one character, but two characters whom are entirely different from one another, and both entirely different from Downey himself. Ben Stiller is also stellar in the lead, not going overboard like he usually does. Jack Black, who's horribly hit or miss these days, is great. I believe this may be because Black will only ever be able to really shine in supporting roles. (Exception being School of Rock of course, that was great!) Many of the other supporting roles were also really well done, but none so much as the one played by none other than Tom Cruise. He's hilarious, in a much needed comedic role that will hopefully mark a turning point in his career. I don't really have much more to say about this one. I went in with high hopes, what with all the great things I've heard about it, and all the great reviews it's been getting. And ultimately I left disappointed. Still go see it though, Robert Downey Jr.'s performance alone is worth the price of admission. fb205000482 Aug 19, 2008
Tropic Thunder Mildly disappointing. A great plot, but poor execution. Cruise and Downey, Jr. make the film. Steve Coogan provides the greatest film exit in recent years. fb762540174 Aug 19, 2008
